What is different on the 2027-28 FAFSA: results right away for most students

Federal Student Aid published its preview of the 2027-28 form on September 3, 2026. The biggest change: most students see their results when they submit, instead of waiting one to three days.

What happened#

On September 3, 2026, Federal Student Aid released a preview presentation of the 2027-28 FAFSA, with screenshots of the form and a list of what differs from last year's. It also put up a clickable prototype.

The deck's "New for the 2027-28 FAFSA Form" slide, marked "As of August 2026", lists six changes:

  • Results right away. "Most students can submit their FAFSA form and receive their results immediately, rather than wait one to three days for their form to be processed."
  • Military Location. The "State of Residence" question now includes it.
  • A renamed section. "Personal Circumstances" is now "Background."
  • Reworded questions about college or career school plans, homelessness and high school completion, based on user research.
  • Review & Sign. The signing step is now one page.
  • Territory tax returns. Students and contributors are asked about filing a 2025 income tax return from Puerto Rico or another U.S. territory.

What it means for a student#

If you are a senior filing for fall 2027, the form will feel familiar, and faster at the end. Seeing your results on the spot means you can catch a mistake the same evening, while the tax documents are still on the table.

Nothing in the list changes who qualifies for aid or how much. These are changes to the form, not to the rules.

If you are a junior, this is a preview of roughly what you will see a year from now, though each year's form can change again.

What we do not know yet#

When the preview came out, FSA wrote that the form was "still in development" and that "some screenshots may vary slightly" from the live form. The form went live on September 23. We have not checked every live screen against the preview.
