What happened#
On April 30, 2026, Florida State University announced a new binding Early Decision option for domestic first-year applicants. The university said Early Decision and Early Action will share an Oct. 15 application deadline, with decisions released on Dec. 17. The new Early Decision option applies to applicants for the summer and fall 2027 semesters. Early Decision is a binding plan, meaning admitted applicants may not apply Early Decision to other colleges. Early Action remains non-binding and stays available only to Florida residents.
What we do not know yet#
We don't know what Early Action's application deadline was before this announcement, so we can't say how this changes the timeline for returning Florida applicants. We don't know whether out-of-state students will have any non-binding early option at FSU going forward, since Early Action stays limited to Florida residents. The announcement doesn't explain what happens if a student needs to withdraw from a binding Early Decision agreement, or how a family is expected to compare financial aid offers before committing. It also doesn't say whether a parent or counselor signature is required as part of the Early Decision agreement.
What it means for a student#
If your student is set on Florida State as a clear first choice, Early Decision is worth discussing with a school counselor, since it is a binding commitment and your student would be expected to withdraw other applications if admitted. If your family wants to keep comparing financial aid packages across several schools before deciding, Early Action or regular decision may be the better fit, since those plans don't require a binding commitment. Florida residents should remember that Early Action remains the only non-binding early option at FSU, so plan transcripts and recommendation letters accordingly. Whichever path your student chooses, ask your high school counselor early how much lead time they need to send transcripts and letters, since early plans move faster than regular decision.
