What happened#

On September 22, 2026, the University of Texas at Austin released its fall 2026 figures. "This year's freshman class was selected from a record 98,841 applications," a 9% increase over the year before and 64.6% more than five years earlier. The entering freshman class is 9,487.

The four-year graduation rate reached 77.7%, the highest in UT's history.

What it means for a student#

If you are a Texas senior applying for fall 2027, UT's admissions page lists automatic admission for "Summer/Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 applicants" at the top 5% of your high school class. UT's page also says its review "informs decisions of admission as well as major selection," so read what it says about the major you want, not only about getting in.

If you are outside the top 5%, or from out of state, your application goes through UT's individual review. Applications rose 9% in one year, so do not let UT be the only school of its kind on your list.

What we do not know yet#

UT has not yet posted the automatic admission rank for fall 2028 applicants, today's juniors. Its page says it tells Texas schools each fall what rank current juniors need.
