Reading Your Odds

How Stratia reads your fit at each school, why the call is consistent, and how it keeps itself honest about the misses

Reading Your Odds — at a glance
1
The four bands
Safety

Your record sits comfortably above what this school typically admits.

Target

Squarely in range — a realistic yes with a strong application.

Reach

Possible, but you're below the admitted middle — or the school admits too few for sure things.

Super-Reach

The most selective edge, where outstanding applicants are turned away unpredictably.

A

If a score helps, it counts; if it would drag, withholding is strategy — not a dodge.

C
The major, not just the school

A comfortable Target overall can be a Reach for direct-admit nursing. Stratia reads the door.

Fit is a band, not a number#

Stratia never hands you a single admit percentage and calls it a day. A number like "23%" pretends to a precision nobody actually has. Instead, every school on your list gets sorted into a band:

  • Safety - your record sits comfortably above what this school typically admits.
  • Target - you're squarely in range; a realistic yes with a strong application.
  • Reach - an admit is possible, but you're below the middle of the admitted class, or the school admits so few students that no record makes it a sure thing.
  • Super-Reach - the most selective edge, where even outstanding applicants are turned away for reasons no profile can predict.

The band is a transparent read: the same record always produces the same band, for you and for every other student, and it comes from your record measured against the school's admitted profile. There is no talking it into a friendlier answer - not by you, not by us, not by an assistant asked the question three different ways.

And you see where every school stands before you have committed to anything.

What actually goes into the read#

A band isn't a vibe or a guess. It's built from the parts of your record that admissions offices actually weigh, lined up against what this specific school looks for:

  • GPA against the admitted middle-50%. Not a national average - the real range of grades this school's admitted students carried.
  • Test scores through a test-optional lens. If a school is test-optional and your scores help, they count; if they'd only drag you down, the read respects that leaving them off is a genuine strategy, not a dodge.
  • Course rigor. Whether you stretched - honors, AP, IB, dual enrollment - relative to what your own school offered.
  • Major impaction, and how you get admitted to it. This is the factor most tools miss. For nursing, business, engineering, and computer science, many schools admit directly into the major, and the bar for that major can sit far above the bar for the university overall. A record that's a comfortable Target for the school as a whole can be a Reach for its direct-admit nursing program. Stratia reads the major, not just the school.
  • In-state versus out-of-state for public universities. At many state flagships, your home state moves the odds more than a few points of GPA would.

Each factor is shown to you plainly, so you can see why a school landed where it did - not just that it did.

In-state vs. out-of-state

At many public flagships, residency moves the odds more than GPA.

Direct-admit nursing / business / engineering / CS can sit far above the school’s overall bar. The factor most tools miss.

The round you apply in changes the odds#

When you apply is part of the odds, not a footnote. The same record can read differently depending on the round:

  • Early Decision (ED / ED2) - binding. If you're admitted, you're committing to enroll and withdrawing your other applications. Because it's binding, schools historically fill a larger share of their class this way - but you can only ED one school at a time.
  • Restrictive Early Action (REA / SCEA) - early and non-binding, but you agree not to apply early to most other private schools.
  • Early Action (EA) - early and non-binding. You hear back sooner and keep all your options open.
  • Regular Decision (RD) - the standard deadline, no strings attached.

Early rounds - binding ED most of all - have historically admitted at higher rates than RD at many schools, which is why the round is a real lever on your odds and not just a scheduling choice. Stratia pulls each school's actual offered rounds from its knowledge base, so you're weighing the choices that school really gives you, not a generic list that may not apply.

The Decision Ledger answers to reality#

Predictions are easy to make and easy to forget. Stratia does the opposite: every prediction is checked against what really happened.

As real decisions come in, you log them in the Decision Ledger - accepted, waitlisted, deferred, or denied, one tap each. Every outcome you log lands beside what other applicants reported for the same school and year, and Stratia checks each result against the band it predicted.

The round you applied in is part of that check. An ED admit to a Reach carries an early-round edge, so it means something different than the same admit in RD - and the calibration accounts for it.

The point isn't to look right. It's to be honest about the misses - a tool that quietly buries the times it was wrong isn't one you should trust with the times it was right. Every logged outcome shows you plainly where the band held and where it didn't. Logging takes seconds.

You're not alone#

Your own outcome means more when you can see it next to other people's. So every decision you log sits beside what other applicants self-reported for the same school - matched not just on the year, but on the round they applied in.

That distinction matters, because rounds aren't interchangeable. An ED1 admit tells you something very different from an RD admit, so Stratia lines your ED1 result up against other ED1 applicants - not against the whole pool blurred together.

Everything drawn from other applicants is clearly labeled self-reported. It's real signal from real students, and we mark it as exactly that so you can weigh it for what it is. You come away with a truer sense of where you stand, and of where the school stood the year you applied.

How Stratia solves this#

The short version of everything above:

  • A band, not a number - Safety, Target, or Reach, computed from your whole record against who each school actually admits.
  • Major-aware and round-aware - the program you apply to and the round you choose both move the read, and both are in it.
  • Broad where it should be - the first read exists for every school before you commit to any of them.
  • Checked against reality - every real outcome logged in the Decision Ledger is compared to the call Stratia made; a tool that predicts should be willing to be checked.

What this gets you#

  • A read you can trust because it doesn't flatter you. Same record, same answer - every time you look, and for anyone else with your record.
  • The factors that actually decide it, including the one most tools ignore. GPA in real range, test scores through a test-optional lens, rigor, in-state status, and major impaction - because for nursing, business, engineering, and CS, the major can outweigh the GPA.
  • The round as a lever, not an afterthought. See each school's real offered rounds and understand how ED, REA, EA, and RD move your odds before you commit to one.
  • A prediction that answers to reality. Every logged outcome is checked against the call Stratia made - round-aware, misses owned.
  • Company for the wait. Your outcome sits next to other applicants' self-reported results for the same school, year, and round - clearly labeled, honestly framed.

Stratia's counselor reads your full record and puts all of this in plain words - and the official numbers underneath her are hers to explain, never to edit. The through-line: you always know what your odds are, why they're that, and that every call is checked against real results - no black box, no spin.

Find your fit. Build your plan. Tell your story.
