What happened#
On August 3, 2026, Rice University announced an expansion of its financial aid program, the Rice Investment. "Beginning with students entering in fall 2027":
- Families earning between $100,000 and $200,000 a year get free tuition.
- Families earning less than $100,000 get "full coverage of tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board."
- Rice "will continue to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for all families without requiring student loans."
Before this, full coverage stopped at $75,000 and free tuition at $140,000.
What it means for a student#
If you are a senior applying for fall 2027 and your family earns under $200,000, Rice's price for you may be far lower than its sticker price. Run Rice's net price calculator with your family's real numbers before you decide it is out of reach. Vanderbilt, Wellesley and BU drew the same $200,000 tuition line this year.
Free tuition is not free college at the higher incomes. Between $100,000 and $200,000, you would still pay for housing, food and fees, less any other need-based aid Rice gives you.
Aid does not help you get in. Put Rice on your list because it fits you, and let the price be one of the reasons.
