On September 9, 2026, Marist University announced the Empire State Promise. "Marist will cap the cost of tuition, housing, and dining at $32,000 for the year for eligible students."

  • Enroll full time.
  • Submit the FAFSA by the required deadlines.
  • Be a new first-year or transfer student entering Marist in 2027.

The Promise renews for up to four years.

What it means for a student#

If you are a New York senior applying for fall 2027, this is a private college with a price you can know ahead of time: no more than $32,000 a year for tuition, housing and dining, if your family's income fits.

Two things to do. File the FAFSA, because the Promise requires it by Marist's deadline. And compare the $32,000 against your real cost at the SUNY or CUNY campuses on your list, including their aid, not their sticker prices. Public systems are moving too: the Universities of Wisconsin have proposed a tuition freeze, though it still needs state funding.

The cap covers tuition, housing and dining. Books, travel and personal costs are on top.
